Caralyn & Austin met while working at Natural Roots, a horse-powered farm in Conway, MA. Although their initial dream of starting a horse-powered farm has been temporarily abandoned, their hearts remain attached to holistic styles of farm management, closed cycles of fertility, and organic/biodynamic practices. They are glad to be rooted in West Rupert!
Caralyn is a master rooster tamer and balancer of vegetables, which stems from her ability to hold delicate and tedious things while maintaining a sense of poise and humor. She is often found harvesting flowers as the sun sets and/or rises, or even in the dark with her trusty headlamp. She started her farming journey in NH, and traveled along the east coast to PA, MA, NY, and VT working at different farms, focusing on organic practices and food insecurity. She is simultaneously very joyful, yet very serious and always keeps her focus moving forward. Caralyn manages the farms communications, and will generally be the main point of contact for any farm-related queries. Despite years of farming, the miracle of seed to fruit/flower/veggie never ceases to amaze her!
Austin is Mr. Make it Happen! No matter what project needs attention, Austin is there ready to contribute inventive solutions and a "won't stop until it's done" ethos. He is a tractor operator extraordinaire, raw milk aficionado, and lover of all cows big & small. Austin has been farming since he was a child, raising food for residents in the Lukas Community, where he grew up. Austin spent his youth working at The Temple-Wilton Community Farm and the Groh Farm. As a young adult, Austin spent 3 years at Hawthorne Valley Farm, first as an apprentice, then returning a subsequent year as an employee. Austin's long-term vision for our farm combines vegetable production with a pasture-raised beef operation and home dairy cow, which coincide with the biodynamic approach to closed loop farm fertility- hence the cow in our logo!
